A Pioneer’s Legacy: Horst Rechelbacher

Horst-throwbackAllen Ruiz, co-owner of Jackson Ruiz Salon in Austin, Texas, said, “Horst was truly a visionary artist and entrepreneur. His exclusive product line that focused on Concept and Lifestyle Salons really raised the bar on the industry, making it something I wanted to be a part of. His impact on the industry and the world will be remembered for a long time to come.”

Paul Villeneuve, VP of Creative for AI South says he was heavily influenced by Horst, who taught him, “By committing to the pursuit of excellence in our craft, we will elevate the craft and ourselves to new levels and lifelong growth.”

Villeneuve adds, “I also learned from Horst that in service to others — guests, students, community, family — you’ll find life’s greatest rewards.”

“And finally, Horst showed us all that through the study of nature we find the highest performing, most sustainable solutions to living in our world.”

Tom Petrillo, Principal at The Salon People, was deeply impacted by Horst’s legacy.

“As I reflect on the impact Horst has had on my life, I become overwhelmed with gratitude and a deep desire to pass it forward,” he said.

“Horst was a mentor, a coach and an inspiration to me. In the time I worked with him, he profoundly influenced my thinking and ability to help and influence the industry we love. Above all else, he constantly reinforced and instilled in me that learning never ends, to care for the world we live in, and to evolve beauty and wellness as vehicles to change people’s lives.”

Ric Wilson, co-owner and artistic director of Pure Aveda Salonspa, said, “I had the honor to work closely with Horst in the ’80s, receiving his mentorship and witnessing the unique way he regarded our industry. He was a visionary who used his influence to create awareness and compassion for the environment, inevitably changing beauty professionals’ attitudes about beauty, fashion and wellness. The products he created brought about the ‘soil to bottle conciseness.’

“Horst’s pioneering efforts paved the way for others, like me, to innovate and improve our industry. He changed the way we thought about the salon lifestyle and introduced concepts of sustainability within natural-based products, long before they became popular. The way I operate my salons and the manner in which I educate is a direct result of my experience with Horst.

“There are people who come into our lives who change things, impacting and shaping our future. Horst was one of those people not only for me, but also for several generations of beauty professionals, through whom his enduring legacy will continue to bloom and flourish like the plants and flowers he loved so much.”

Terrence McKee, co-owner of Nuovo Salons and Spas in Sarasota, Florida, recalls his personal connection to Horst.

“In 1979, very close to Aveda’s inception, I flew to Atlanta, as a young assistant in the beauty industry, and had my hair cut at Jamison Shaw Hairdressers. I purchased my first bottle of Clove Shampoo and tub of Cherry Almond Bark Conditioner and heard the story of Horst, his travels and his philosophy. I was hooked and harassed my salon’s owner until he promised to carry the products.

“In the years to follow, I would attend every Congress, every hair show — anywhere Horst was appearing. Consequently, I met Horst on several occasions, including an opportunity to do make-up for him backstage. I will never forget him teaching me how to create ‘Lauren Bacall lips’ with Scarlett Sage lipstick from the then INDRA Colour Cosmetics line.

“I loved the fact that he could express all parts of his creative and logistical genius. His mission was always clear — environmental leadership and responsibility, not just in the world of beauty, but around the world — all the while, collecting art, building an empire and creating beauty.”

“Horst expressed in a way that transcended appropriateness and ignored judgment, at all times embracing beauty, fashion and wellness—the cornerstones on which he built Aveda.”

Van Council, owner of Van Michael Concept Salons in Atlanta, said, “Horst was a mentor to me from the first day we met at a hair show in 1980. What impressed me initially was his creative mind, but once I got to know him, I realized what an amazing business sense he possessed. He was an amazing person, a trusted friend and his impact on the hair industry is immeasurable.”
